Charlie telemark racing at Steamboat Springs - Photo by Joel Reichenberger
In one week, I will be leaving for Norway to compete in the Telemark World Cup Skiing Finals and the Telemark World Championships. So check back for I’ll be writing blogs during my travels.
Hard to believe I have the time to race at such a high level let alone train for the events. But it’s all about focus and quality over quantity. At least in my hours put into this sport. I’ve been coaching telemark racing for the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club for a few years and have been racing on and off for several years. I call myself a racer/coach and when I have my race-face on I take it very seriously. Although it’s just a passion for my family and career in real estate take first priority over my adventures as a telemark ski racer.

2010 is in the books and what a year it was. We started the year with more questions than answers. But many questions were answered.
Buyers are back. Transactions are up 170% from 2009. 24% increase in home sales for Fish Creek and Downtown. 40% increase for Mt. area.
Prices are down. Total listings are down 3% but gross listing volume is down 11%. Thus, sellers have been lowering prices. Total volume up 116% from 2009.
Multiple offers are back. It’s mostly bank owned homes, short-sales and some well priced properties, but with buyers looking for deal, we are seeing multiple offers at times.
The bottom is here . . . maybe. I can say that many sectors of the Steamboat Springs market looks as though we’ve reached the bottom. But that’s not the case for other areas.

Do you realize how much you pay in rent over a period of years? There’s been a lot of discussions lately regarding home ownership. And frankly, there are solid arguments in favor of renting versus owning a home today. The primary argument against home ownership today revolves around appreciation in the values of real estate. Over the last 2-3 year real estate has not gone up in value. In fact, home values have gone down – up to 50% or more in places. And home ownership is down as well.
Home ownership should not be taken lightly. Sure we’d all like to make gains on our real estate as we have done so almost consistently for 70+ years. But as we have learned from the past few years, nothing is guaranteed. Yet, now that we have weathered what seems like the worst of the storm, let’s remember what home ownership is all about. And let’s look at the past to help us in the future. Imagine that.
