The close to 100 year old Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club is part of the heart and soul of Steamboat Springs. For those of you who don’t know about our town, let me introduce you to our ski club. The Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club (SSWSC) is the oldest ski club in the west established in 1914. The multi-sport club is based out of Howelson Hill which is owned and operated by the City of Steamboat Springs. Howelson is located right downtown and is the oldest continually run ski hill since its opening in 1915.

The SSWSC boasts that it has sent athletes to all but two of the winter Olympics since 1932! Steamboat Ski Areas most famous ambassador is the Olympian, Billy Kidd.  Billy the Kidd, won an Olympic Silver medal in the slalom race and still can be seen on the slopes today.

The SSWC is run by the community, for the community with events all season long including the spectacular Winter Carnival. This year, the Winter Carnival is celebrating its 100th year. The SSWC is a non-profit and raises money in numerous ways. In addition to the Winter Carnival, the SSWC makes money by hosting ski competitions, a winter tubing operation, and a summer Alpine Slide. Also, the Steamboat Ski and Resort Corporation is one of the largest supporters of the club in many ways.  The Steamboat Ski area donates 100% of the lift ticket sales from the annual Scholarship Day event to provide SSWC scholarships to area youths.

The Steamboat Springs Winter Sport Club is a unique opportunity for youth in our community. And…it’s just one of the many!
