Free Pass for Families of 4th Graders into National Park

Do you have a 4th grader this 2015/16 school year? If so, your family is eligible for a FREE pass to our nation’s outstanding National Parks!

The program is part of the “Every Kid in a Park” initiative, an administrative-wide effort among the National Park Service, Forest Service, Dept. of Education, Fish & Wildlife Service, National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration and others, to get all children to visit and enjoy the outdoors and inspire a new generation of Americans to experience their country’s unrivaled public lands and waters.

As of September 1st, every fourth-grader in the nation will receive an “Every Kid in a Park” pass that’s good for free admission — for them and their families — to all of America’s federal lands and waters for a full year. Students just need to sign up online and they will then get a voucher that grants entrance to the student and a carload of passengers to federal recreation areas for one year.

Catch the Drift With the Yampa River Festival

Catch the Drift With the Yampa River Festival

Water. Water is vital to the existence of our people and planet.

The Yampa Valley is blessed with copious amounts of good, clean, cold water that comes from snow melt. It feeds our rivers and reservoirs providing miles and miles of recreational use, habitat for fish and animals, and drinking water for our neighbors downstream. In honor of this great resource, and to raise awareness and educate the public, Leadership Steamboat and the Friends of the Yampa have put together Water Week – a week of educational offerings, film screenings, and gatherings revolving around water and Yampa River stewardship.

Thursday, May 28th marks the launch of the Catch the Drift campaign by Leadership Steamboat. The goal is to educate locals and visitors by emphasizing good stewardship of the Yampa River. The group will develop and install signage along key parts of the Yampa River, and sell Stewardship Kits containing a reusable water bottle, Catch the Drift stickers and handouts in a mesh bag, and is hosting a fundraising event at the Chief Theater featuring speakers, an auction and more.

Snow, Water, Rivers and our Environment – VIDEO

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2015

The ski area just closed. And there’s still snow on the mountains- but less than there was last year.  Snow and water are big deal Colorado. Water brings life to the Yampa valley and without it, Steamboat would be a lot different.  The Yampa and Elk rivers flow through Steamboat Springs creating great recreation for everyone. But cold water is something we need to think more about and get involved in keeping it here.

Here’s a great video that touches on our climate, water, and trout.

Steamboat Mud Season – What to Know

Steamboat Mud Season – What to Know

Steamboat Springs locals and visitors enjoyed a fun closing weekend at Steamboat Resort as legendary reggae band, Steel Pulse, brought our ski season to a close with their incredible music. It was awesome!

Now that the mountain is closed for skiing, our town enjoys a little “mud season” before the Resort opens again for mountain biking and festivities and our summer fun begins. Mud season, our unofficial 5th season, is when many of our businesses take a little time off before the busyness of the next tourist season. Locals enjoy this time because the town is quiet, parking is plentiful and businesses run outstanding specials.

Some years we really do have mud to contend with but not so much this year. Our trails have dried out quite a bit already, flowers are in bloom, and the sandhill cranes are back in the valley to raise their young.

BEFORE: A Short Video About a Short Time in Life

Do you remember being 11 years old?

A good friend of mine at Slantyhouse Productions made this great video about life through the lens of one 5th grade class on the last day of elementary school. What it’s like to be 11; a tween.

This 37 minute documentary short is incredibly well done, charming and heartfelt. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

And if you are still looking for summer camps and activities for your tweens and elementary school aged children, here is a guide to summer camps in Steamboat Springs. Our town is a lot of fun anytime of year but summer in Steamboat Springs, CO is really special. Thankfully, there are many options for childcare in Steamboat Springs, whether you are a resident or not, which make it easier for parents to enjoy an afternoon to themselves.

Steamboat in the summer

Recently MarketWatch.com named Steamboat among it’s top 10 Great Mountain Towns for Retirees. The article references our awesome snow, we call it “champagne powder”, opportunities for skiing, river sports, biking, hiking and ample sunshine. All of those things are true and certainly great draws for retirees but what it doesn’t mention are these 4 things, which I think would be important to most retirees:

A Great Video of a Colorado Mountain Town

Thursday, July 17th, 2014

Here’s a wonderful video shot around Telluride, Colorado. It’s not Steamboat Springs but it captures the mountains of Colorado which I’m so blessed to live in. Steamboat is not quite this amazing but it’s pretty special. Want to search Steamboat Real Estate?
