Getting Your Ski Legs Back – The Importance of Ski Conditioning and When to Begin… Right Now

Screen Shot 2017-10-06 at 10.37.33 AM

Skiing and snowboarding are not only fun, exhilarating ways to get some fresh air, and to spend some time with friends and family in our beautiful Rocky Mountains. They are also physically demanding activities. That’s why it’s so important to be proactive, not reactive, and to prepare for the upcoming season with a good ski conditioning regimen, says Emily Harris, Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) at Steamboat Spine & Sports Physical Therapy. No one knows how much strain skiing and snowboarding can put on our bodies like physical therapists. They’re the ones who deal with all the injuries that can result from imbalances and weaknesses in the body.

“Even if you’re already in great shape from trail running or mountain biking, skiing and riding on the mountain is going to test your body in different ways. If you’re not ready, you are more likely to sustain an injury. So, preparing your body for it is crucial,” Harris says. “It’s important to start training a couple months out.” With the recent snowfall in the Yampa Valley, that time is now.

The Takeover Continues – Deer Valley added to KSL Portfolio

Screen Shot 2017-08-21 at 3.31.48 PM

The new owners of the Steamboat Ski Area continue to make news in the ski industry, announcing today that they have reached an agreement to acquire Deer Valley Resort in Utah. This takes their growing portfolio to 13 resorts in the U.S. and Canada. The purchase is anticipated to be completed prior to the 2017-18 ski season.

The new company, which has yet to be named, is a partnership between KSL Capital Partners and Henry Crown and Co. The company came together earlier this year in the effort to purchase Intrawest Resort Holdings and Mammoth Resorts – deals which were finalized back in July.

There has been some confusion regarding the affiliation between Aspen Skiing Co. and the purchase of Steamboat and Intrawest. While Henry Crown and the Crown Family own Aspen Skiing Co., Aspen Skiing Co. is separate from the new partnership between Henry Crown and Co. and KSL Capital Partners. So the ski resorts acquired under these recent deals were not purchased by Aspen Skiing Co., as many had previously thought.

Gearing up for this year’s ski and snowboard season? If you find yourself needing equipment, clothing and outdoor gear, don’t miss the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Clubs‘ annual Ski & Sport Swap. Here, local and regional vendors selling new gear and thousands of locals consigning their gently used goods come together to sell all sorts of outdoor equipment in this benefit for our local Winter Sports Club. I will warn you though, it gets crazy but it can be worth it.

A few things to note:

  1. Go with a list. It’s easy to get overwhelmed by all the people, items for sale and deals. Have a list to keep yourself on track.
  2. Get there early. For $5 you can be among the first to pursue and purchase tonight, Friday, November 6, from 7:00 – 9:00pm. Depending on what you are looking for, it may be worth it.
