US Telemark National Championship Ski Races Begins
The US Telemark National Championship Ski Races will be held in Steamboat Springs February 22-24. Why do I write this? Because it tells you a little bit more about who I am. Last year, at the age of 48, I won the National Championship in New Hampshire. And no, that’s not for my age group, that’s overall. Yes, the majority of my competition is much younger than I am. But my competitive spirit and drive just comes out of me when I race.

I started alpine racing many years ago and was a member of the US Telemark Ski Team for the last 4 + years. I still continue on with this passion into my old age of 49! Not bad for a very physically demanding sport. In March, I will be going to Spain to compete in the World Championship.

The close to 100 year old Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club is part of the heart and soul of Steamboat Springs. For those of you who don’t know about our town, let me introduce you to our ski club. The Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club (SSWSC) is the oldest ski club in the west established in 1914. The multi-sport club is based out of Howelson Hill which is owned and operated by the City of Steamboat Springs. Howelson is located right downtown and is the oldest continually run ski hill since its opening in 1915.
The SSWSC boasts that it has sent athletes to all but two of the winter Olympics since 1932! Steamboat Ski Areas most famous ambassador is the Olympian, Billy Kidd. Billy the Kidd, won an Olympic Silver medal in the slalom race and still can be seen on the slopes today.

The forecast calls for SNOW. With a slow start, the Steamboat Ski Area got off to a slow start primarily relying on man-made snow. Now I applaud the Steamboat and Howelsen hill ski areas for we were skiing on schedule albeit just a few runs. But now, Old Man Winter has been hanging around Steamboat Springs, Colorado for the last two weeks and that’s making everyone happy. Snow is just a good thing.
With this added natural snow, Storm Peak opened today. I’m sure there’s some powder turns being cut today. At least for first track skiers. Now this snow is not only vital for skiing in Steamboat, but the reservoirs in Colorado are low from a dry season last year. So we all need this snow for the health of our rivers like the Yampa river and the Elk river here in Steamboat Springs.

Last week Steamboat Springs hosted the best telemark ski racers in the world for 5 races in 6 days. These are the fastest racers from all over the world. And it just so happens the this realtor from Steamboat happens to be a decent telemark skier as well. I know, I’m old but I’m still fast. And no, there’s not a senior division. I compete against guys half my age. Below are some pictures and link to some videos.
It was a good week for me. I placed 16th, 13th, 10th, and two 9th places. I was the fastest American male that week. No it’s back to work. Hey, check out my new listing I brought on last week while racing.

Over the last 5 years, there’s been a huge change to the eco-system around Steamboat Springs. This change is most often referred to as those “red trees” by folks who don’t know that those trees are “dead trees”. They’ve been killed by the Mountain Pine Beetles who don’t consume the wood like a termite, but instead live off the nutrients that flow just under the bark before their one year life cycle ends.
Once a tree is infested with the Mountain Pine Beetle, nothing can be done to save it. To date about 3 million Colorado acres have been victim since the Beetle population exploded during the 1990′s. Beetle kill trees are a great forest fire risk and they pollute the air and streams. As the number of dead trees has increased, they are falling on roads, camping tents and power lines.

The first snow of the year brings a change for locals here in Steamboat. I call it the “ower” transition. It’s the day one puts away the lawn mower and pulls out the snow blower. Where most folks garden 12 months of the year, living in Steamboat we put away all gardening tools for 5 months. I’m mixed on this. I do like to garden and I enjoy lush landscapes, but I love snow and telelmark skiing.
I love living in Steamboats and my kid and dog don’t mind the snow either. It seems things just get simpler this time of year. And the ski resort opens soon so plan your trip today.
Get ready Steamboat Springs, this could be it. Rake those leaves. Mow that lawn. Put away everything and prepare for winter. 8 – 16 inches is headed out way but skiing is looking great for the 2011/2012 season at Steamboat. The Steamboat Springs snow storm is coming.
“The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for Steamboat and the surrounding areas beginning at noon Saturday and continuing to 6 p.m. Sunday. Total snow accumulation is expected to be in the range of 8 to 16 inches. Sustained winds of 10 to 20 mph could include gusts of 30 mph or stronger. National Weather Service meteorologists say gusts could even reach 50 mph and create blizzard conditions in the Elkhead, Park, Gore and Flat Tops mountain ranges.”
I’m ready for the winter. And this season Steamboat is hosting 5 World Cup Telemark races that I will be racing in. Bring it on.

My goal embarking on this trip to the World Cup Finals and World Championships was to get a top 15. I really felt that such results was attainable. Sure, I get that I’m competing against racers more than half my age. And yes, the majority of these racers literally take this sport very serious and they train on-snow, 6-7 days a week for 8 months out of the year. And yes, many of these racers are funded by their national telemark organizations. But heck, I have desire too. But I’m learning that desire, and hard work albeit sporadic, just doesn’t get you to the top of your sport. So, with one race to go, it’s looking my I will fall just shy of my goal and be content with my best finish of 16th place.
