The Takeover Continues – Deer Valley added to KSL Portfolio

The new owners of the Steamboat Ski Area continue to make news in the ski industry, announcing today that they have reached an agreement to acquire Deer Valley Resort in Utah. This takes their growing portfolio to 13 resorts in the U.S. and Canada. The purchase is anticipated to be completed prior to the 2017-18 ski season.

The new company, which has yet to be named, is a partnership between KSL Capital Partners and Henry Crown and Co. The company came together earlier this year in the effort to purchase Intrawest Resort Holdings and Mammoth Resorts – deals which were finalized back in July.

There has been some confusion regarding the affiliation between Aspen Skiing Co. and the purchase of Steamboat and Intrawest. While Henry Crown and the Crown Family own Aspen Skiing Co., Aspen Skiing Co. is separate from the new partnership between Henry Crown and Co. and KSL Capital Partners. So the ski resorts acquired under these recent deals were not purchased by Aspen Skiing Co., as many had previously thought.

102nd Steamboat Springs Winter Carnival

Winter Carnival Steamboat Springs

Winter Carnival Steamboat Springs

For 102 years now, Steamboat has celebrated our love of snow and our western and ski heritages with one heck-of-a Winter Carnival. Imagine 4 days of festivities, snow activities, fireworks, friendly competitions, and shenanigans that bring a community and visitors together for fun and merriment. That’s what the 2015 Winter Carnival here in Steamboat Springs, CO is about.

This year we are also celebrating Howelsen Hill’s 100 year anniversary. Thanks to Norwegian ski jumping champion, Carl Howelsen, who came to the Yampa Valley in 1913 along with his skis and his passion for snow sports, we have one of the oldest continuously running ski areas in Colorado (Howelsen Hill) and have one of the oldest Winter Sports Clubs in the nation. Howelsen organized friends and neighbors to build a modest ski jump in Steamboat and kicked off the first Winter Carnival with jumping competitions and cross country ski races. The rest is history.

Steamboat Ski Resort’s Opening Day Tradition

We are one week away from the official opening of our ski season here in Steamboat Springs! Since 1991 the Steamboat Ski & Resort has so generously supported the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club by giving its opening day, also known as “Scholarship Day“, revenues to the local Club. Since 1991/92, the Ski Resort’s Scholarship Day has raised nearly $850,000 for the Winter Sports Club. Pretty impressive, don’t you think? Tickets will be between $20 – $30 dollars. They will determine that soon. Depends on snow conditions and how many lifts will be open.

Boatload of Festivities Set for Steamboat’s Closing Weekend

Over 406″ of snow fell on the summit of Mt. Werner at the Steamboat Ski Area this season making for a great year of skiing, snowboarding and other snow play. I hope you were lucky enough to enjoy some champagne powder while it was falling because this ski season is coming to an end.

Top 10 Steamboat Winter Activities That Do Not Involve the Ski Slopes

While skiing or snowboarding is typically the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of a ski town like Steamboat Springs, those activities are clearly not all we have to offer for outdoor winter activities.

Here are 10 other winter activities to be enjoyed in The ‘Boat:

1.  Breath in the beauty of the backcountry on cross country skis. The Yampa Valley offers hundreds of miles of nordic skiing opportunities, check out the Steamboat Springs Nordic Council for that list.

2.  We dare you NOT to smile while tubing Howelsen Hill – it can’t be done! Rides to the top of the hill via the magic carpet means no lugging kids and tubes making this a great family outing. Steamboat’s snow tubing will have everyone laughing and smiling.

More Winter Olympians Being Produced Here

Did you know that more than 79 Winter Olympic athletes since 1932 have called Steamboat Springs their hometown? That is more than any other city in the United States, or so I’m told. And if all goes well, we could be sending over 30 more athletes to compete in the upcoming 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

Some of those 30+ athletes vying for the upcoming Winter Olympics came here specifically to train for their sports career while most were born and raised here. Either way, Steamboat offers great training facilities, good terrain and weather for year-round athletics, fantastic coaches and an unconditionally supportive community.

US Telemark National Championship Ski Races Begins

The US Telemark National Championship Ski Races will be held in Steamboat Springs February 22-24. Why do I write this? Because it tells you a little bit more about who I am. Last year, at the age of 48, I won the National Championship in New Hampshire.  And no, that’s not for my age group, that’s overall. Yes, the majority of my competition is much younger than I am. But my competitive spirit and drive just comes out of me when I race.

I started alpine racing many years ago and was a member of the US Telemark Ski Team for the last 4 + years. I still continue on with this passion into my old age of 49! Not bad for a very physically demanding sport. In March, I will be going to Spain to compete in the World Championship.
