Outside Magazine Ranks Steamboat High

Steamboat Springs has it all.

I’m always talking about what an incredible place Steamboat Springs is. From the performances at Perry Mansfield Performing Arts School, to riding bikes on the Yampa River Core Trail to ski jumping at the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club there is so much to do and see here. Steamboat really does have it all. But don’t take my word for it, well-respected publications have taken note of our bounty of fun, beauty and activities too.

Last month, Dog Fancy Magazine named Steamboat Springs “Dog Town USA” stating that we are a “mile-high mecca for dogs and their owners”. Every year it seems we get recognition for being one of the best ski areas in the nation, and rightfully so. Last year National Geographic ranked Steamboat a Top 25 Ski Town and the year before Ski Magazine readers voted us #8 in the top 20 ski resorts.

2013-2014 Steamboat Springs Ski Passes on Sale

The flowers are blooming-go buy your ski pass! The 2013-2014 Steamboat Ski Area passes are on sale until June 1st so hurry up and go online to reserve your pass. After June  the prices go up.

A season’s pass will be $979 until June 1st.  Between 6/1/2013 and 9/2/2013 the price rises to $1,089. I’m not sure what happens after the September 2nd deadline but I’m sure it’s not going to be cheaper.

A variety of other passes are available. The 6 and 15-day passes are quite popular, especially for out-of-town skiers and riders. Additional days can be purchased after you use up your days for $55 and $45/day respectively. To make it easy for everyone, Steamboat Springs Ski Area has a system set up for you to download your own photo to create your pass. They will mail it to you or you can pick it up when you arrive. Alternatley, you can always show up in person for your mug-shot. I think this is a great benefit to our out-of-town guests.

Another Magical Day Skiing on Rabbit Ears Pass

It’s hard to believe but Alpine Skiing is not the only winter sport in Steamboat Springs!

The way I view back-country skiing is  it is basically getting my exercise while taking a hike in the woods with a few moments of exhilaration (or fear) as I turn in the undisturbed powder. The beauty and peace of the Colorado Mountains just can’t be beat.

Rabbit Ears Pass is one of my favorite haunts. It’s a 20 minute drive from Steamboat Springs to most of the trails which are frequented by skiers and folks on snow shoes. The National Geographic Trails Illustrated map #118 for Steamboat Springs Rabbit Ears has the cross-country trails clearly marked. You can find these maps at numerous shops in town including the Ski Haus.

Hazie’s – A Great Bar in Steamboat Springs Colorado

Sometimes the best bars are in unexpected places. Hazie’s at the top of the Gondola is a perfect example. It’s just a great, fun and slightly elegant restaurant and bar. Brian, the bartender, has been tending bar there for the past 8 years and has it all figured out. He does a great job of getting to know the patrons and he definitely makes everyone feel like a local.

US Telemark National Championship Ski Races Begins

The US Telemark National Championship Ski Races will be held in Steamboat Springs February 22-24. Why do I write this? Because it tells you a little bit more about who I am. Last year, at the age of 48, I won the National Championship in New Hampshire.  And no, that’s not for my age group, that’s overall. Yes, the majority of my competition is much younger than I am. But my competitive spirit and drive just comes out of me when I race.

I started alpine racing many years ago and was a member of the US Telemark Ski Team for the last 4 + years. I still continue on with this passion into my old age of 49! Not bad for a very physically demanding sport. In March, I will be going to Spain to compete in the World Championship.

Retiring in Steamboat Springs? Casey’s Pond May be an Option

Lifestyle is why many of us love living in Steamboat Springs. Retiring  to Casey’s Pond Senior Living Community will let people maintain their connection to all the wonderful parts of Steamboat Springs while getting the extra assistance they may need down the road. As we age, so do our parents. Casey’s Pond will also enable some of us to bring our parents closer to home and family.

Ski Home in Steamboat Springs – Just Steps From the Chairlift!

Ski Home in Steamboat Springs - Just Steps From the Chairlift

Location is everything in real estate; you can change the color of paint in a house but you can’t change the location of a chairlift. This Ski Home on Ski Trail Lane in Steamboat Springs is just steps away from the Christie chairlift.

From the beginning of the day to the end of the day, 2455 Ski Trail Lane provides the ultimate ease for people who love to play on a ski area. With just a one minute, 32 second walk to the chairlift, life couldn’t get any better.
Start your play-day by heading into the heated room attached to the 2 car garage to put on your boots. Then pull your gear from the secure ski storage area and stroll on over to the Christie chairlift.  One minute, 32 seconds is pretty handy. If you’re over 6’, maybe it will take you 1 minute 16 seconds? Again, location is everything.

The Chairlift is the New Google in Steamboat Springs

Chairlift Google can often be a better search engine than Google – for it’s more local.

Steamboat has a reputation for being a very friendly town and that friendliness pours over onto the ski slopes too. If you don’t know anyone in town, just ski by yourself one day and suddenly you’ll have 3 phone numbers and 2 new best friends. Well, that might be stretching it a little but if you make an effort, you can meet a lot of really interesting people when you ski by yourself.
