Steamboat Springs Summer ’11 – In Retrospect
As winter seems to be rolling into Steamboat Springs, Colorado with our first snowfall since June (yep, winter hung around a long time last “spring”) predicted tonight, it only seems fitting to take a look back at the events that brought visitors to Steamboat Springs this past summer. We know that skiing in Ski Town USA on champagne powder is the main draw to Steamboat Springs in the winter, but summer-time offers a wide variety of options for week/weekend get-aways.
Whereas the early August weekend that holds the Wine Festival, Ride 4 Yellow and Triple Crown events was the 2010 weekend winner, this activity filled weekend fell to #2 in 2011 behind the Mountain Soccer Tournament and Tour de Steamboat weekend.
The July 4th holiday along with the Triple Crown baseball tournament held steady as Steamboat Springs’ #3 busiest summer weekend.
New to the Top 10 was the Steamboat Marathon which celebrated its 30th year this past summer. Also new to the Top 10, but not officially listed in the Top 10, was the USA Pro Cycling Challenge held at the end of August over a two-day, one night period of time that brought a stage finish and a stage start of a world-class, global cycling event literally watched around the world. So while this event would have ranked #6 lodging occupancy wise, from a Steamboat Springs visibility standpoint, it earned #1 hands down.
With a new CEO at the helm of the Steamboat Springs Chamber of Commerce, and increases in spending on marketing Steamboat Springs as a summer vacation destination, prepare to see these events not only multiply but also shift around in the rankings.
