The Hub of Steamboat – The Buddy Werner Library

The library can be a hub of a community; they serve as community builders, community centers, and inspiration all. Steamboat Springs’ Bud Werner Memorial Library certainly exemplifies that sentiment.

Although Steamboat’s first library was established in 1887, the original Bud Werner Memorial Library was built in 1967 in memory of Steamboat’s beloved hometown hero, ski icon and Olympic athlete Wallace “Buddy” Werner. When Bud passed tragically in an avalanche in the Swiss Alps people from around the world contributed to construct a library in his honor.

In 2008, the library underwent a major renovation and expansion bringing it to over 35,000 sq. ft.. Incorporating stringent energy efficiency practices and sustainable materials earned this community resource Silver LEED certification by the U.S. Green Building Council. The stunning architecture allows for true enjoyment of Steamboat Springs. A wall of windows overlooks the Yampa River and sulphur springs, outdoor patio spaces for reading while soaking up the sun and grassy knolls for relaxing and watching community theater performances.

The lower level is an active social center containing a coffee bar, a teen zone, and a children’s area complete with weekly activities, computer games and a reading programs. The upper level offers quiet spaces, private study rooms and ample computers. The original Bud Werner Memorial Library was incorporated into the modern remodel and now serves as a community meeting space and memorial hall. Friendly staff are pleased to share their local knowledge, ideas of free things to do in town or assist with finding materials.

Steamboat’s library is architecturally sophisticated and thoughtfully designed. Whether looking for a quiet place to relax and escape the elements, entertainment for the children, classes for adults or other resources, the Bud Werner Memorial Library serves as a hub for locals and visitors alike.
