For 102 years now, Steamboat has celebrated our love of snow and our western and ski heritages with one heck-of-a Winter Carnival. Imagine 4 days of festivities, snow activities, fireworks, friendly competitions, and shenanigans that bring a community and visitors together for fun and merriment.

This year we are also celebrating Howelsen Hill’s 100 year anniversary. Thanks to Norwegian ski jumping champion, Carl Howelsen, who came to the Yampa Valley in 1913 along with his skis and his passion for snow sports, we have one of the oldest continuously running ski areas in Colorado (Howelsen Hill) and have one of the oldest Winter Sports Clubs in the nation. Howelsen organized friends and neighbors to build a modest ski jump in Steamboat and kicked off the first Winter Carnival with jumping competitions and cross country ski races. The rest is history.

If you’ve never experienced this unique event, you really should check it out. Even the National Geographic included Steamboat Springs as one of the best Winter Carnivals in the world. It is one of the biggest events our community has every year, the kind that schools close for so the children can partake in the fun, the kind that builds community and the kind that makes this little mountain town so special.

See you there,
Charlie
