SmartWool in Steamboat Springs

As one of the larger employers of locals here in Steamboat Springs, SmartWool’s headquarters will remain in Steamboat Springs for at least another 10 year. Most likely longer but who can tell.

It’s great to hear that today July 14, 2011, the City of Steamboat Springs and SmartWool have agreed to a long-term deal to stay in their current location and even expand as the company grows. SmartWool, the leader in Merino wool socks and apparel originated in Steamboat and has become one of Steamboat’s largest job provider.

The recent news of SmartWool, who was previously owned by Timberland, was recently acquired by apparel giant VF Corp., of Greensboro, N.C., announced June 13 that it bought SmartWool parent company, Timberland, for $2.2 billion.

This is all great news for many here in Routt County. SmartWool locally employs around 65 and another 15 or so in Boulder, Colorado. So seeing this commitment and cooperation between SmartWool and the city of Steamboat is very encouraging.

This is also great news for our local economy. More jobs and more stability is what this recovery is all about. And soon, I won’t be talking about the unsettling real estate market – but more the stable real estate market because of one job creator – SmartWool.
