Steamboat Springs Fly Fishing Rubber Hatch.

In fly fishing, one talks about “matching the hatch.” That mean you select the right artificial fly to match the natural flies that are in the area and what the fish are eating at the time. This process can change every 30 minutes so one might be changing flies often. But during the summer months in Steamboat Springs, it’s rather predictable that during the hot month of the summer, the “rubber hatch” will be going off. That’s my buddy Bobby working both the hatches.

Now this “rubber hatch” is a term the Steamboat fly fishing people say when the tubers are out. Tubing the Yampa river in Steamboat Springs is a very popular summertime event. It’s easy, refreshing, and a great way to spend a few hours floating and seeing Steamboat Springs from the river. The Yampa is a great tubing river, it’s also a great trout fishing river and these two activities don’t always work together. Yet the Yampa river is for everyone to enjoy and fishing and tubbing can co-exist together as long as everyone respect their space.

And for those fishing, if you want a little more peace and serenity, there are plenty of other places open to the public to catch fish. Or just pick you, cast to the trout, and say hello to the tubers as they float by.

Fish-on, tube-on Steamboat. They are both a blast.
