As part of my focus on the remarkable community of Steamboat Springs, I would like to highlight a local organization that has been helping to open the world of outdoor mountain recreation to adaptive and special needs participants since 2006.

Founded by Craig and Andrea Kennedy, Steamboat Adaptive Recreational Sports, or STARS, provides recreational opportunities for people with disabilities, helping to empower and enrich the quality of the lives of its participants.  STARS provides one on one instruction, as well as group programming to people of all ages and ability levels.  Its winter programs include adaptive skiing with the use of private instruction and highly specialized adaptive equipment, as well as the Buddy Program, which provides an escort around the ski area for more experienced guests not in need of adaptive instruction or equipment.

STARS also recently expanded its offerings to include adaptive cycling, kayaking, hiking, fishing and water skiing.  Sports camps offered throughout the summer season include STARS Summer Adventure Camp, Camp Achieve, Sunday Stroll Bike Rides, Behind the Boat Water-ski Camp, Rising STARS Camp, Adaptive Bike Rentals and Adaptive Mountain Biking Lessons.  STARS is also a chapter of Disabled Sports USA and a US Paralympic Sportclub.

In addition to its many adaptive sports programs, STARS provides a great opportunity to give back to the community by becoming a volunteer.  For additional information, please contact craig@steamboatstars.com.  See Stars in Facebook here.

Steamboat Adaptive Recreational Sports (STARS) is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization. Your contribution is tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
